740,816. Automatic speed control systems. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Dec. 18, 1953 [Dec. 31, 1952], No. 33117/52. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVII] In a reel motor control system for, e.g., a wire drawing machine or strip mill, the motor armature current is maintained constant and the field regulator is operated by a pilot motor in accordance with the difference between the reel motor armature voltage and a reference voltage. Inertia compensation is provided. Constant current.-As shown, the exciter 4, of a Ward-Leonard reel-motor-drive 1, 2, is controlled through an amplifier 6 (preferably a magnetic amplifier) in accordance with the difference between the I.R. drop across the interpole winding and a reference voltage from a potentiometer 9, to maintain a constant loop current. Motor field control.-The motor field F1 is energized from a D.C. supply 10, 11 through a rheostat 14 driven by a pilot-motor 15 having its field F15 energized in accordance with the difference between the reel-motor back E.M.F. developed across points 21, 22 (see Specification 580,005), and a reference voltage derived from a tachometer generator 18 driven by the main mill motor, thereby maintaining the desired relationship between the speed of the reel and the mill. (The reference voltage may alternatively be obtained from the mill motor B.E.M.F.) Inertia compensation.-An auxiliary input to the amplifier 6 is supplied through a capacitor 34 from the taoho-generator 18 to provide an acceleration signal. This signal is shunted by a rheostat 35 which is also driven by the pilotmotor 15 and hence will vary with the reel diameter, i.e. the inertia of the system. Other features.-(i) A field A.F. 15 on the pilotmotor is energized through a capacitor 28 from a tacho-generator 27 to stabilize the system. (ii) The field F15 is shunted by dry-plate rectifiers 29 or non-linear resistors to limit the control effect for large errors. (iii) An overcurrent alarm relay 30 may be connected in series with the field 15. (iv) Contactors 23 ... 26 allow manual operation for setting up the system ready for a reeling operation.
