Abstract

874,767. Foot supports. SCHOLL MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Aug. 13, 1959 [Aug. 14, 1958], No. 27761/59. Class 17(2) A foot support for securing in ah article of footwear such as a shoe, to support the wearer's. scaphoid, comprises a resilient supporting member 1 wedge-shaped transversely, and having its inner edge 7 of segmentally elliptical shape to conform to the curve of the under side of the human foot arch, and thin top and bottom covers 2, 3 having a similar contour to the supporting member 1, the thick side 9 of the member 1 conforming in shape to the vertical contour of the footwear upper 5 on the inside of the instep portion. Suitable materials for the member 1 include sponge and foam rubber, polyvinyl chloride foam, and felt, while it is preferable that thermoplastic films be used for the covers 2, 3. The top cover 2 may be a polyvinyl chloride unsupported film made in simulation of leather and the bottom cover 3 an extremely thin (e.g. a few thousandths of an inch) polyvinyl chloride or cellulose acetate film. A pressure-sensitive adhesive 6 is provided on the under surface of the cover 3 by which means the support is secured in the shoe. The top outer edge 8 of the supporting member I is arcuate to conform to the horizontal contour of the shoe upper 5, while the top cover 2 is preferably provided with a slight downward curvature 4 along the outer edge 8. The top and bottom covers 2, 3 are heat sealed along their bounding edges, and where the member 1 is of polyvinyl chloride foam or the like, this may also be incorporated in the heat seal. The support is symmetrical about its central transverse axis so as to fit footwear for either the right or left foot.
