Abstract
874,195. X-ray systems; transformers. ZEISS-STIFTUNG, CARL. [trading as ZEISS, C., [firm of]]. July 13, 1959 [July 14, 1958], No. 23916/59. Classes 38 (2) and 38 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] A high-velocity beam 5, Fig. 1, of charged particles, e.g. electrons, produced by a generator 1 comprising an earthed anode 4 and a control electrode 3 which together with the cathode 2 is maintained at a high voltage, e.g. - 100 kv., relative to the anode, is pulse modulated by coupling a pulse generator 10, Fig. 6 (not shown, see Group XL (c)), at ground potential to the control electrode 3 through a 1 : 1 toroidal highinductance isolating transformer, Figs. 3 and 4. The control electrode 3 is biased relative to the cathode 2 by the output from a rectifier 12 which is connected in series with the secondary winding of the transformer 11 and the magnitude of this bias is controlled by adjusting the magnitude of the A.C. input to the rectifier 12 which is applied thereto through another isolating transformer 13. The generator 1 may comprise an electronbeam, electron-microscope, high-voltage oscilloscope, the particle injector system of a linear or circular accelerator, X-ray tube or highvoltage transmitting valve. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the isolating transformer 11 comprises a toroidal ribbon core 19 of high permeability covered by a layer of foam material 20 on which is wound a single layer secondary winding 21 having output leads 25, 26, the components 19, 20 and 21 being embedded in a toroid 22 of insulating potted resin over which is wound a single layer primary winding 23 which is fixed in position by a coating of cold-hardening resin or by a layer of lacquer. The leads 25, 26 are enclosed in an insulating projection 24 which is potted together with the potted resin toroid 22. The primary winding 23 may be covered with a partially conductive coating to protect the pulse generator against flash-over in the high-potential secondary winding.
