Abstract

659,739. Magnetic induction accelerators. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. Nov. 13, 1947, No. 30222. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] A magnetic induction accelerator with a plurality of spherical magnetic lenses arranged around the periphery of the accelerating tube 10 and serving to stabilize the electron beam, is provided with one or more annular cathodes 13 arranged concentrically to the lenses in the middle between two or in the middle between each two successive lenses 11, 12. The voltage for the initial acceleration of the electrons is connected between the cathode 13 and a tubular anode 15, 16; these electrodes form an electrostatic immersion lens. The cathode 13 has a concave face towards the end 15 of the anode 15, 16 which is provided with a bevelled edge. The cathode has an active coating, or electrons may be emitted from an incandescent wire placed near the surface of the cathode. The anode 15, 16 may be subdivided into several cylinders connected to different voltages. The cathode may be brought to the potential of the anode after the introduction of the electrons for the rest of the accelerating period. The cathode may be symmetrical in both directions where electrons are accelerated in both directions of revolution,
