Abstract
Sintered alumina articles, such as wire-drawing dies or grinding on metal-cutting tools, comprise a matrix of alumina, preferably alumina of at least 99.9%, and preferably 99.99% purity, 90% of the particles being of less than 10 microns diameter, there being also included, if desired, up to 66% of the weight of the alumina of another hard refractory material such as silicon carbide of average diameter of 1 micron or electro-corundum of up to 2 mm. in diameter; the combined weight of titanium, manganese and sodium oxides should not exceed 0.02% and that of silica should not exceed 0.1% of the weight of the alumina. The alumina is first made up into a paste with water or an aqueous solution of ammonia or an organic liquid, e.g. alcohol or glycol; if ammonia is used, the paste is subsequently neutralized with an organic acid, e.g. formic acid. A fatty acid derivative such as sperm oil may be added as a wetting-agent. The paste is cast, moulded, or extruded into the desired shape, dried, consolidated by heating to 400-1400 DEG C., and machined either before or after sintering, which is effected at 1450-1500 DEG C. for a period of 10-15 minutes.ALSO:Sintered alumina articles, such as wire-drawing dies or grinding or metal-cutting tools, comprise a matrix of alumina, preferably a -alumina, of at least 99,9%, and preferably 99,99% purity, 90% of the particles being of less than 10 microns diameter, there being also included, if desired, up to 66% of the weight of the alumina of another hand refractory material such as silicon carbide of average diameter of 1 micron or electro-corundum of up to 2 min. in diameter; the combined weight of tiatanium, manganese, and sodium oxides should not exceed 0,02%, and that of silica should not exceed 0,1%, of the weight of the alumina. The alumina is first made up into a paste with water or an aqueous solution of ammonia or an organic liquid, e.g. alcohol or glycol; if ammonia is used. The paste is subsequently neutralized with an organic acid, e.g. farmic acid. A fatty acid derivative such as sperm oil may be added as a wetting-agent. The paste is cast, moulded, or extruded into the desired shape, dried, consolidated by heating to 400-1400 DEG C., and machined, either before or after sintering, which is effected at 1450-1500 DEG C. for a period of 10-15 minutes.
