Abstract
1,197,561. Abrasive compositions; metal polishing compositions. NATIONAL BESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 15 June, 1967 [29 June, 1966], No. 29123/66. Headings C4V and C5W. [Also in Divisions B1-B2] A tarnish- or corrosion-resistant metal polish comprises 8-hydroxyquinoline. A liquid polish may consist of the quinoline and a suspension of an abrasive, e.g. alumina, magnesia, tripoli, or alumino-silicate abrasives in an aqueous or organic medium, preferably with a pH of 3-5. A solid or waxy polish may include stearic acid, stearine, glycerides or beeswax. Example 1 discloses an aqueous abrasive polish containing 2% by wt. 8-hydroxy quinoline, and 25% alumina or magnesia, adjusted to pH 4 with acetic acid. In Example 2 liquid polishes contain 2% by wt. 8-hydroxyquinoline, 15% ammonium stearate, 28% abrasive, 2% glacial acetic acid or 1% each of ammonia and alcohol, and 55% of a solvent which may be naphtha, ethanol, methanol, acetone, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethylene or water. Example 3 discloses a wax polish consisting of 24% by wt. each of paraffin wax and stearic acid, 48% "tripoli" abrasive and 5% 8-hydroxy quinoline. Ether is also mentioned as a solvent medium.
