Abstract
534,673. Pottery manufacture; ceramic glazes. GARBISCH, N. S. Sept. 20, 1939, No. 26216. Convention date,. Dec. 16, 1938. [Class 87 (i)] [Also in Group XXIII] Pulverized glass which has been treated with acid, in order to remove free alkali, is used as a flux in the manufacture of pottery. Preferably the glass is treated first with dilute alkali and subsequently with strong mineral acid, such as sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid. The treatment with alkali may be replaced by treatment with water for a considerable period, or the time may be reduced by effecting the treatment at high temperature and pressure in an autoclave. A suitable mixture for a pottery body comprises 50 per cent. pottery clay, 38-46 per cent. of crushed flint, and 4-12 per cent. of the treated glass. The mixture can be pressed or shaped while plastic, or it may be formed into a slip which is cast in porous moulds. The slip may be applied as a glaze to other bodies.
