Abstract
873,323. Stackable containers ; container closures.' CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Jan. 22, 1959 [Feb. 3, 1958], No. 2478/59. Classes 66 and 125(3). [Also in Group XXV] In a drum or like container including a body 5 having an open end, a cover 8 for the end and including a depending skirt 9 snugly to embrace the drum body around its open end and having an opening 16, a fastener means 17 comprises a supporting plate 18 secured to the outer surface of the drum body and swingably supporting a catch 24 with one end portion 27 thereof in position for being received in and projecting outwardly through the skirt opening 16 as the cover is mounted on the body, the end portion 27 of the catch being swingable downwardly through the skirt opening 16 into a position to hold the cover in place on the body. As shown each cover has two annular ribs 12 to provide a groove which is engageable by ribs 13, 14 on the drum bottom, whereby to facilitate stacking of the drums. The end 27 of each catch is offset and is provided with a screwdriver or like slot 28. In use, the cover is applied with the slotted offset end of the catches in the upright position so that they extend through the skirt openings 16. The catches are then turned through 180 degrees in which position the offset ends engage a curl 15 of the cover. A gasket may be provided between the cover and drum body and the supporting plate may be provided with a lower edge cut-out for the passage of a sealing wire through the skirt-opening and the slot in the catch. In a modified form of catch, Fig. 15 (not shown), the offset end is provided with rounded corners to provide a camming action with the curl 15. In another arrangement, Figs. 13 to 17 (not shown), the cover skirt is offset at its lower portion and .the skirt openings are positioned at the offset. The offset end of each catch is provided with a T-shaped opening extending into the catch offset and an aperture provided on the catch for yielding engagement with a dimple on the supporting plate. The offset form of skirt permits the covers to be nested when not applied to the drum bodies.
