872,255. Surface condensers; tubular heat exchange elements. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 10, 1959 [March 10, 1958], No. 7565/58. Class 64(3) A surface condenser comprises a bank of tubes from each of which a longitudinal fin projects at such an angle over at least a part of its surface that condensate forming on the tube surface above the fin is deflected by the fin so as to fall clear of a tube lying vertically beneath it. The fins may be formed in one piece with the tube or welded thereto. Fig. 2 shows one form in which fins 5 extend at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal. In a modification the fins 5 in adjacent rows may extend in opposite directions. Fig. 3 shows a further form in which fins 7, 8 extend downwardly at an angle of about 45 degrees on each side of a tube. In a further form described the fins may extend horizontally and are crimped or corrugated to provide valleys into which the condensate may drain and from which it will be directed downwardly. Such tubes may be bent to U-shape. According to the Provisional Specification the tubes in one horizontal row may be staggered with respect to the tubes in adjacent rows. Specification 784,484 and U.S.A. Specification 2,375,334 are referred to.
