Abstract

871,147. Gyroscopic apparatus. FERRANTI Ltd. May 23, 1958 [March 1, 1957], No. 6821/57. Class 97(3) [Also in Group XXXIV] Apparatus for defining the vertical comprises two spheres each having its centre of gravity displaced from its geometrical centre, such as by making one hemisphere 10 of aluminium and the other of brass 11, and each supported in a generally spherical housing 14, 15 by a gaseous medium under pressure. The air issuing from jets 18 supports the sphere and some passes through the vertical passage 12 and horizontal passages 22 to issue as somewhat tangential jets 13 which spin the sphere about the axis 12<SP>1</SP>, the jets 13 being so arranged that the two spheres rotate in opposite directions. A steel ring 19 co-operates with pickoff coils 20, 21 mounted upon the housing 15. Each sphere and housing is mounted in a gimbal system with servo-motors operating magslip transmitters and magslip followthrough transmitters so that the outgoing signals are dependent upon the attitude of the supporting craft whereas lateral accelerations precess the spheres in opposite directions and the resultant signal is zero. In a modification the ring 19 and coils 20, 21, are omitted and the sphere is painted half black and half white, photo-electric cells being used to indicate departure of the line of demarcation from the horizontal.
