Abstract
778,680. Gyroscopic apparatus. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd. Nov. 6, 1953 [Dec. 17, 1952], No. 32001/52. Class 97(3) A gyroscopic device for measuring the rate of turn and lateral acceleration comprises a rotor movable about a shaft capable of restrained angular movement about any axis perpendicular to the shaft and capable of limited restrained lateral movement relative to the shaft. Magnetic pick-off means adjacent to the shaft indicate the magnitude of the displacement of the ends of the shaft. As shown, the rotor 1 rotates above shaft 7, which has slightly flexible lengths 14, 15 and is supported by balls 16, 17 and diaphragms 8, 9. Angular movement of the device about axes perpendicular to 3, 3 cause displacements of the ends of shaft 7 in opposite directions which are detected by the pick-offs 20, 21. Similarly, accelerations of the device laterally to 3, 3 cause like displacements of the end of shaft 7 which are detected by the pick-offs. A.C. signals generated at 20, 21 are applied, through amplifiers to indicating meters.
