Abstract

<PICT:0870720/III/1> Furnace black is produced by injecting a liquid make upwards into a furnace 1 from a cluster of at least four spray nozzles 9, air for partial combustion being supplied through ports 5. There are at least four nozzles 9 and there may be as many as 18 or more. Each nozzle may have an angle of spread of 30 degrees. The make may be injected into the furnace together with steam and may be preheated thereby. The upward gas velocity in the furnace may be 1-6 ft./sec. The temperature in the furnace may be 2300 DEG F. or higher. The make may be creosote or fuel oil. The yield of black may be as high as about 600 lbs./hr. The oil absorption of the black may be as low as 8 gals./100 lb. Examples are given. Specification 763,159 is referred to.
