Abstract

A non-combustible wick for pyrophoric igniters is made by mixing equal parts of zirconia and finely ground organic material, such as cork or sawdust, with one-third part of a heat-resistant salt, such as mono ammonium phosphate or barium or sodium chloride, moulding the mixture under pressure, and baking at a temperature above 1400 DEG F. Oxides of cerium, beryllium and yttrium, the dioxides of uranium and thorium, or tetra-oxide of vanadium may be used instead of zirconia. The wick may be in the shape of a dome, hollow cylinder or multi-flanged cylinder.
