Abstract
A process for the reduction of iron oxides comprises forming a lining of molten iron in a centrifugal reactor rotating about a horizontal axis and adding iron oxides and reducing carbon, the reactor space being heated by the combustion of a fuel with oxygen or oxygen-enriched air to give a neutral or weakly oxidizing flame. The iron lining may be formed by reducing iron oxide or by melting a charge of solid iron. The reducing carbon may be solid or liquid mixed with the oxides or an emulsion of oil and carbon may be sprayed into the reactor.
