Abstract
Barium sulphide may be prepared by reduction of pelletized barium sulphate in a fluidized bed at 900-1100 DEG C. The reducing agent may be solid or gaseous. Thus carbonaceous material may be incorporated into the pellets to serve as: (a) reducing agent and fuel; (b) reducing agent and part of fuel requirement; (c) only reducing agent. In the case of (b) and (c) fuel requirements may be met by using additional reducing gas. The reduction of the pelletized barium sulphate may also be accomplished wholly by gaseous reducing agents, a part of the gas used also serving as fuel. The gaseous fuel may, equally effectively, be burnt in the fluidized bed or in a burning chamber below the grate.
