Abstract
870,011. Respiratory masks. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. Jan. 20, 1960 [Jan. 21, 1959], No. 2050/60. Class 81 (2). An exhalation valve and speaking diaphragm unit for a mask comprises a member adapted to be coupled at one end to an outlet of the mask and having a plurality of spaced outlets, a speaking diaphragm covering the opposite end, and valve means carried by the outside of the member and normally covering the outlets. As shown, a tubular coupling 4 is retained in the outlet 3 of a mask by a clamping ring 10 and is integral with or joined to the base of a cup 5, exhalatron outlets 7 in the base being normally covered by a flexible annular flange 8 with an attachment portion clamped between the outlet 3 and the coupling 4. A diaphragm 15 marginally clamped between bowed perforated plates 16, 17 covers the front of the cup 5 and is spaced therefrom by a gasket 18. A screen 21 is mounted in front of the baffle plate 16 and may be spaced therefrom at its marginal edge by a member 20, apertures 24 in the screen being staggered in relation to the perforations 25 in the plate 16. The cup 5 and its associated parts are clamped together by a ring 22.
