Abstract

837,354. Breathing-masks. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. Jan. 20, 1958, No. 1840/58. Class 81(2). A breathing-mask has a window secured in a slot in a bead around the window, clamping means engaging the bead on opposite sides of the slot and being spaced from the bead where it surrounds the edge of the window. A rubber facepiece 1 has a window opening 3 surrounded by an integral bead 4. A window 6 is fitted in a slot 5 in the bead 4, the sides of which are clamped together by a clamp 10 which encircles the bead 4. The clamp 10 comprises rigid upper and lower interchangeable halves each having an outer flange 11, which engages a shoulder 7 on the bead 4, and an inner flange 12 which engages a groove 8 formed between the bead 4 and the facepiece 1. The halves of the clamp 10 are drawn together by screws 16 engaging lugs 15 at their ends and thus stretch the bead slot 5 over the edge of the window 6 and press the sides of the bead slot 5 against the window 6. When in position a space 13 is left between clamp 10 and the part of the bead 4 adjacent the extreme edge of the window 6. The facepiece has a flexible sealing lip 2 near its edge and grooves 19 adjacent the ends of the window 6 to increase the flexibility of the facepiece. An air supply is connected to a coupling 23, air flowing, on inhalation, into a housing 21 and thence by way of an inhalation valve 26 into a space between the facepiece and a deflector 31. Most of the edges of the deflector 31, which is secured around a speaking diaphragm 32 by a ring 33, contact the facepiece 1 to define a duct on each side of the facepiece. The ducts open adjacent the ends of the window 6 so that air sweeps across the window 6 before being inhaled. A tube 24 extending through the deflector 31 and the housing 21 conveys exhaled air to an exhalation valve 27. In an alternative construction (not shown) the tube 24 is omitted and inhalation valves are provided in the air inlet housing and in the ducts formed by the deflector. Exhalation valves are provided in the base of the deflector and in the housing. The inner flange of the clamp 10 may be replaced by a band pressed against the groove between the bead and the facepiece by the clamp. Specification 837,355 is referred to.
