Abstract

735,277. Respiratory appliances. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. Oct. 26, 1953, No. 29525/53. Class 81 (2). A device for connecting an opening in an air filter with an opening in a face piece comprises a tube which extends through both openings and is pressed against the sides of the openings by a tubular member inserted into the tube. The air inlet opening 4 of a face piece 1 is secured to the outlet opening of an air filter 8 by a flexible grommet 14. The flexible grommet 14 is of circular cross-section and is deformed to fit the openings 4, against which it is expanded by a removable rigid tubular member 15 to form a seal, the passage through the tubular member 15 forming an air passage between the air filter 8 and the face piece 1. A flexible flap valve 18 which closes on exhalation is secured to the inner end of the tube 15. The wearer may exhale between the facepiece cushion 2 and the face or outlets covered by flexible exhalation valve discs 6 may be provided. The air filter 8 is provided with material 9 for filtering out noxious gases and a perforated partition 11 spacing the material 9 from the back wall of the air filter 8. The air filter 8 may be readily replaced by a mechanical dust filter (Fig. 6) formed from a case 20 containing a sheet 21 of dust filtering material clamped in place by a perforated cover 22 and provided with an outlet opening 23 by which it is secured to the face piece 1 using the grommet 14 and rigid tubular member 15.
