869,852. Liquid fuel burners. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd., JOSEPH. July 3, 1957 [July 23, 1956], No. 22687/56. Class 75(1). A liquid fuel nozzle includes a swirl chamber having a discharge orifice i .and an axial orifice k at its base leading to a cavity m connected by passages q, p, r, to air ducts g terminating in a discharge orifice w coaxial with the discharge orifice i of the swirl chamber. At low rates of fuel supply to the nozzle no air core exists at the axis of the swirl chamber and consequently fuel passes through the rear orifice k and the passages q, p, r to the air ducts g where it is nebulised by the airstreams and the mixture is discharged through the discharge orifice w. At high rates of fuel supply an air core forms in the swirl chamber and prevents the fuel from passing through the rear orifice k; the fuel therefore is nebulised by the swirl chamber and is discharged through the front orifice i. The nozzle comprises a hollow nipple having on its conical forward end helical grooves providing the air ducts g. An insert e co-operates with the nipple d to provide the swirl chamber, the base orifice k, the cavity m, the passages p, q, and further passages n, o which deliver fuel to the swirl chamber. A further insert f has fuel passages s conveying the fuel from a passage b in the nozzle body to the passages n. Air is conveyed from a passage c in the nozzle body to an annular passage t between the nipple d and an inner sleeve v. The parts are secured in position by an outer sleeve x screwed to the nozzle body and spaced from the inner sleeve v to form a further air passage which directs air across the front of the nozzle.
