Abstract

A body of resilient cellular material is provided with a protective coating by applying first a cell-sealing layer of a non-cellular rubber composition or other non-cellular flexible composition from an unfoamed aqueous dispersion, and then a surfacing layer of a chlorosulphonated-polyolefine composition from a compounded chlorosulphonated-polyolefine solution. The body may be of foamed natural or synthetic rubber, foamed polyurethane, resilient expanded polyvinyl resins, or the material comprising fragments of cellular material bonded together described in Specification 869,624. The cellsealing layer may be applied from a latex of natural rubber or butadiene-styrene copolymer thickened with sodium alginate or sodium carboxy-methyl-cellulose, and when applied to polyurethane is gelled immediately by immersion in a coagulating agent; or when coating expanded vinyl resins the cell-sealing layer may be of a vinyl chloride-ethyl acrylate copolymer. The surfacing layer may be a chlorosulphonated polyethylene, applied from a solution in an organic solvent such as xylene, which may also contain in solution or suspension a cross-linking agent such as magnesium oxide, and hydrolysing agents such as water in conjunction with phthalic acid and stearic acid. Pigments may also be included. The coatings may be applied by brushing, dipping or spraying; alternatively, the first coating may be applied to the walls of the mould in which the cellular article is made. Heating to effect vulcanisation and cross-linking may take place at any stage.
