Abstract
A painting-mask for a sub-assembly is made by applying a substantially unsolvated plastisol or organosol to a solid master mould to form an enveloping coating thereon, fusing the coating on the mould, stripping it therefrom and removing reverse portions, i.e. those which overlie surfaces which will be hidden or invisible when the subassembly is in its assembled position. The plastisols or organosols may be those based on polyvinyl chloride homopolymer, or copolymer which may, however, be wholly or partially replaced by polyethylene, and application is preferably by dipping the mould, pre-heated to above the gelation temperature of the plastisol, in the latter. Brushing and spraying may also be used. In use, the mask, produced as above, is emplaced over a pre-treated sub-assembly which has been incorporated in an assembly to be painted, and a primer or top-coat, or both, applied to the assembly and dried and/or stoved, after which the mask is removed for re-use.
