Abstract

A rubber article is provided with a flocked surface by applying a coating containing a mixture of rubber latex and flock to its surface, drying and vulcanizing the coating, and treating the flocked surface with a halogenating agent. The rubber article, e.g., a glove, may itself be formed by applying a coating of a rubber latex composition to a form, as by dipping, allowing it to stand and solidify, treating it with a coagulant, and allowing it to dry to a damp condition. After the rubber latex-flock mixture, which also contains water-soluble gelling and thickening agents, has been applied and solidified, it may be washed to remove water-soluble compounds, dipped in a lubricating stripping solution, e.g., an aqueous solution of a water-soluble polymeric hydrophilic colloid such as alkali polyacrylates, cellulose ethers, proteins and vegetable mucilages, and then dried. The rubber coatings are then vulcanized, e.g., in a hot air oven, and the article is wetted, stripped from the form, and washed. It is then halogenated in an aqueous bath containing chlorine or bromine; after neutralization of the halogenating agent by adding a weak solution of ammonia or dimethylamine, the article is dried by tumbling in dry air.
