Abstract

Articles comprising moulded sponge or cellular rubber bonded to metal are produced by bonding to the metal by means of an iso-cyanate bonding agent prior to the moulding step, a film of unvulcanized rubber, which film is exposed to contact with the rubber being expanded during the moulding process, so that the rubber is expanded and vulcanized and bonded at the moulding stage. The rubber may be natural rubber, polychloroprene, butadiene-acrylinitrile, or GR-S and the gassing agent may be sodium bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate, p-dinitro benzene, or dinitroso pentamethylene tetramine. In an example, a metal strip of iron, steel or light metal is sandblasted or degreased with trichloroethylene and then treated with a uniform thin coat of isocyanate bonding agent and then with a coating of a composition consisting of smoked sheet rubber, zinc oxide, stearic acid, soft black and benzene. The treated part was then baked for 1 hour at 100 DEG C. and then the sponge rubber composition applied and the whole heated at 307 DEG F. for 10 minutes.
