Abstract

Rubber is bonded to metal particularly in the manufacture of footwear (see Group VII), by first coating the metal with nickel and then vulcanizing the rubber in contact with the nickel. In an example, a rubber mix consisting of smoked sheet or smoked sheet and reclaim, softeners, reinforcing agents, fillers, pigments, antioxidant, sulphur and mercaptobenzthiazole or zinc mercaptobenzthiazole, was sheeted and then applied to malleable iron tips, previously electrolytically coated with nickel. After cutting to shape the rubber-coated tips are moulded at 55 lbs. per sq. inch steam pressure for 15 minutes at a mould pressure of 1 ton per sq. inch.
