Abstract

288,354. Broomafield, H. Dec. 7, 1926. Indiarubber compositions.-A non-permeable cellular sheet material suitable for the manufacture of boots &c. consists of raw rubber, fillars such as ground vulcanized rubber, lithopone, zinc oxide, vulcanizing agents, and fibres, with a cell producing agent such as water, ammonim carbonate &c. the mix being compounded without the use of naphtha or other softening agent which causes rupture of the cells. A suitable composition consists of 8 lbs. of rubber, 2 lbs. 8 ozs. of lithopone, 8 ozs. of zinc oxide, 4¢ ozs. of sulphur, 5 lbs. of fibre to which is added 10 per cent. of water. An accelerator is added, the mix is sheeted, and vulcanized at atmospheric pressure at 90‹-120‹ C. The amount of water may be varied to vary the cell formation, the moisture naturally absorbed from the air being sometimes sufficient, or rubber direct from the washing mill or an aqueous rubber paste may be used. The vulcanization may take place in stages, for example a smooth or embossed surface may be formed in a vulcanizing press, and the vulcanization completed without pressure. A film of unvulcanizable rubber may be super. imposed before, during, or after vulcanization. A hard wearing surface may be obtained by moulding a rubber mix, pressing it into contact with the vulcanized cellular sheet, with or without a film of a vulcanizable solution, and press vulcanizing the two sheets together. The cellstructure of the first-made sheet is not destroyed by the second vulcanization.
