Abstract

Cellular rubber articles are made by filling a composition into a mould of dry permeable material, placing in an autoclave and vulcanizing at a pressure greater than 300 atmospheres, cooling without releasing the pressure, and finally removing the articles from the moulds, whereupon they expand to 8-12 times their original volume. Strips may be rolled up into cylinders with an interposed sheet of paper or the like, and the ends covered with caps; balls &c. may be embedded in the autoclave in a mixture of sand and talc, sawdust, earth, or litharge. 5-25 per cent of waxy or resinous materials may be mixed with the rubber, or rubber and balata of the composition to minimize escape of gas from the cells of the material.
