Abstract

Buoyancy elements are formed of a plurality of lamin each moulded from a composition consisting of granulated cork uniformly distributed in and bonded by a matrix of vulcanized rubber. The lamin may be united by adhesive or bound together by water-repellent canvas or other material. The rubber composition is prepared by milling rubber with vulcanizing ingredients, accelerators, fillers, softeners and antioxidants, and, if desired, colouring agents, and then with granulated cork. The mixture is placed in a mould and vulcanized by heating to about 140 DEG C., when the occluded air or the blowing agent causes the material to expand. According to the Provisional Specification, shredded kapok may be used in place of granulated cork.
