Abstract

A composition for use in the manufacture of a chafer element for protecting the head of a pneumatic tyre (see Group XXXIV) comprises vulcanized discrete particles of a polymeric material of substantially prismatic shape embedded in a matrix of unvulcanized polymeric material. The discrete particles are preferably cubical and of vulcanized natural rubber, and the unvulcanized polymeric material may be natural rubber, butadiene-styrene or butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, or a polymer of chlorobutadiene. In an example, the composition comprises 100 parts by weight of unvulcanized natural rubber, 300 parts of vulcanized particles of natural rubber, and 50 or 100 parts of carbon black, and vulcanizing and other ingredients.
