Abstract
Shaped rubber and the like articles are made by mixing a concentrated aqueous dispersion of rubber or the like with an amount of a rubber softening agent in excess by weight of the content of the rubber or like in the dispersion and with agents capable of forming gas in the mixture on heating, of gelling the mixture, and if necessary of vulcanizing the mixture; rubber solvents may also be added. The mixture is shaped whilst unset and, after setting and at least until no longer plastic, the mixture is heated under pressure conditions restraining swelling; if necessary the vulcanization is completed after release of the pressure restraining swelling. The softening agent is stated to prevent distortion of the articles on shrinkage due to drying on storing. The dispersions may be natural or artificial and may be vulcanized or not. Softening agents specified are rosin oil, paraffin oil and petroleum jelly; gas generating agents specified are ammonium carbonate and petrol; a gelling agent specified is ammonium carbonate; solvents specified are petrol and paraffin oil; some of the substances specified e.g. petrol and ammonium carbonate may be added for more than one purpose. Reinforcing agents, e.g. hair or fibre and colouring agents may be added to the mixture. The heating under pressure may be carried out in closed moulds or between platens or under fluid pressure and the mixture may be completely vulcanized whilst so heated.
