Abstract

Moulded microporous rubber articles are produced by spreading a rubber latex composition containing gelling and vulcanising agents on to a shaped plastic mass comprising a moist finely divided inert water-insoluble solid, gelling the spread composition, vulcanising the rubber while it is supported by the shaped plastic mass under conditions preventing evaporation of water from the composition, and subsequently separating the vulcanised article from the moulded plastic mass. In the manufacture of battery separators the plastic mass which may be a stiff colloidal clay, or a paste-like mixture of water and chalk or whiting is extruded in the form of channelled strip, alternatively depressions may be stamped on it by a press. The strip is then treated with a coagulant such as aqueous aluminium sulphate or calcium sulphate or formic acid and is then spread with compounded latex. The clay strip is then carried to a gelling chamber and the latex gelled and then covered with a strip of fabric and wound on to a flanged drum and the whole treated at 170 DEG C. in an autoclave to vulcanise the rubber. The clay is then washed off, and the rubber sheet flattened by gentle heating and then cut to size.
