Abstract
A porous skin is obtained on the surface of a sponge rubber article by coating the surface of a mould with a non-surface-active water-soluble hydrophilic colloid material suspended in a vehicle and then moulding natural or synthetic latex foam against the coated surface: a part only of the mould surface may be thus coated. The colloid may be an alkali metal polyacrylate, e.g. sodium polyacrylate; a carboxalkyl cellulose, e.g. carboxy-methyl cellulose; a cellulose ether, e.g. methyl cellulose; polyvinyl alcohl; a water soluble protein, e.g. gelatine or casein; or a watersoluble vegetable mucilage, e.g. sodium or ammonium alginate or locust bean gum. The colloid may be applied to the mould surface as an aqueous solution of 0.1-10 per cent concentration and allowed to dry, at least partially, before the latex foam is put into the mould. The mould may be a closed metal mould, a flat metal pan or a metal conveyer having side ledges. The latex may be gelled or coagulated by chemical means, e.g. a coagulating gas, or by freezing.
