Abstract

The inner walls of hollow articles made of fabric material are coated by partly filling the article with an aqueous rubber dispersion, inflating the article, distributing the dispersion over the inner walls of the article, releasing some of the air and injecting a coagulating gas such as carbon dioxide under pressure, and finally heating or vulcanizing the article while maintaining the gas under pressure. The articles to be coated may be water-containers, floats, inflatable mattresses, water toys, and balloons made by sewing together suitably shaped pieces of fabric. The dispersion, which may be prevulcanized, is distributed over the inner walls of the article by turning it, and a greater thickness of coating may be provided at places by holding the article in a fixed position. Before pouring in the rubber dispersion, the outer walls of the article may be moistened with water or a solution of glue or water glass in order to contract the interstices of the fabric.
