594,967. Moulding rubber balloons &c. by dipping. DEWEY & ALMY CHEMICAL CO. Nov. 24, 1944, No. 23496. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1943. [Class 87 (ii)] A balloon or other hollow article having a thick-walled neck i: made by dipping a coagulant-coated former into a liquid dispersion of rubber to form a gel deposit thereon, withdrawing the mould from the dispersion, removing liquid from the neck by initiating syneresis therein, and enlarging the body portion of the balloon &c. by inflation while a substantial portion of interstitial water remains therein. The initiation of syneresis may be effected by working, stretching or kneading the neck, or by immersing the neck in hot water, the result being that serum bleeds out of the gel. This serum is wiped away. The gel, after removal of the serum from the neck, is stripped from the mould and placed on an inflating nozzle 8, the neck being tied by tape 10.
