Abstract
Liquid titanium tetrachloride containing vanadium impurity is purified by heating to at least 100 DEG C. with a mixture of saturated or unsaturated organic material having an iodine value not exceeding 25 and an unsaturated organic material having an iodine value of at least 80, the organic materials being carbonised under the conditions obtaining, and the thus purified titanium tetrachloride is separated from the solid carbonisation products. The organic mixture is preferably employed in an amount of 0.2-1.0% by weight. The low iodine value material may be a mineral, animal, or vegetable oil, and the high iodine value material, which constitutes 2-20% by weight of the mixture, may be an oil, fat, or wax, preferably a vegetable oil such as linseed, castor, cottonseed, or specially soya bean oil. The mixture is preferably a high iodine value vegetable oil with a mineral oil. The process may be carried out at any suitable pressure, preferably by boiling under reflux.
