Abstract

Fats, fatty oils and waxes are refined by treatment with alkylolamines mixed or not with liquid ammonia; an alkylolamine soap is preferably added to the amine when the free fatty acid content of the material treated is low. Mono-, di-, and tri-ethanolamines or mixtures thereof are preferred for refining vegetable oils, may be by countercurrent treatment. In an example, raw cottonseed oil is treated at 40 DEG C. with \ba1/3\be vol. of monoethanol amine and the mixture allowed to settle. The oil layer is separated and is freed from any amine by heating in vacuo and blowing an inert gas therethrough, or by washing with water. The amine is recovered from the solution of fatty acids, colouring matter and other impurities by distillation, preferably under an absolute pressure of about 25-30 mm. and with steam at about 120 DEG C., the vapours being passed through a rectifying column to separate the amine from condensed steam. Coco nut oil is treated at about 35 DEG C.
