Abstract
Ricinoleic acid or an ester thereof is pyrolysed in admixture with water vapour to yield n-heptaldehyde and undecylenic acid or an ester thereof. The acid or ester is preferably admixed with 0.3-3.0 times its weight of water vapour and heated to pyrolysis temperature in a separate zone or dispersed in superheated steam. Heating is effected at 500-700 DEG C. generally for less than 5 seconds and suitably by passage over or through extended surfaces of heat-conducting material such as steel, graphite or molten lead. Conditions are preferably such as to give 70-95% decomposition of ricinoleate per pass. Products ar cooled rapidly, freed from water, and fractionated in vacuo. Esters of aliphatic alcohols of up to 4 carbon atoms are preferred starting materials. In examples, methyl ricinoleate obtained by alcoholysis of commercial castor oil, isopropyl ricinoleate, castor oil, and ricinoleic acid are treated.
