Abstract

868,831. Tyre-moulding machines. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Jan 2, 1959, No. 245/59. Class 87(2). A tyre band 10 is shaped and cured by simultaneously moving mould sections 21, 23 together and supplying air through a pipe 37 into the inside of the tyre. The tyre is sealed by rings 25, 26 having frusto-conical surfaces 28 which are large enough to allow the beads of the tyre to roll over during shaping, and still maintain contact with the rings. Modified shapes of the rings are shown in, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). Gaskets 19 seal the space between the rings and the mould sections. After shaping, the tyre is cured by supplying steam through the pipe 37 into direct contact with the tyre, the air being exhausted through the pipe 31. After curing, the steam is evacuated through the pipe 31, and the press opened. On raising the mould section 23, the tyre remains embedded in the mould section 21 and any condensate remaining in the tyre is blown out through the conduit 31 by supplying air through the pipe 37. The rings 25, 26 are then raised, the ring 26 stripping the tyre from the mould section 21 by lifting the lower bead. The mould may be heated by steam jackets, electrically or by placing the apparatus in heating fluid.
