Abstract

831,625. Moulding air-springs for vehicles. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Dec. 3, 1957 [Dec. 6, 1956], No. 37616/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXII] An air spring (see Group XXXII) for a wheel suspension system is moulded and vulcanised by taking a blank built up on a drum from plies 22, 23 of rubberised fabric having an interior lining of Neoprene and slipping it over the head 57 of a pneumatic plunger 50 together with a flanged cup 33 which forms part of the finished spring. The ram of the press is then lowered and the end of a boss 55 contacts a bead 24 of the blank and the cup 33 and clamps them together against the head of the plunger to form a fluid tight seal. As the ram continues to descend, it forces the plunger 50 downwardly against resistance from the pneumatic cylinder 61. Shortly after the bead 24 is clamped, continued lowering of the ram causes the large bead 25 to be engaged in the groove 62 in the base section 48 and immediately after that, the intermediate section 47 engages the bead to clamp it and produce a fluid tight seal. Air or steam under pressure is then introduced through a pipe 76 to the interior of the blank. As the mould continues to close, the bead 24 is forced by the boss 55 through the large bead 25. When the mould is fully closed, the blank takes up the position shown in Fig. 7. After vulcanisation is complete, the press is opened, but the plunger 50 is retained in its lowered position, the spring being stripped from the mould sections and remaining on the boss of the top mould section. When the mould is completely opened, the spring is removed by a slight tug. Alternatively, air under pressure can be introduced through a passage 77 in the top mould section to blow the spring off the mould. The mould sections may be steam heated. It is stated that by moulding the spring in this telescoped shape, the wall of the spring is normally under tension, which prevents wrinkling and premature failure of the spring in use.
