Abstract

864,443. Tyre moulding-machines. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Dec. 5, 1958 [May 2, 1958], No. 39252/58. Class 87(2). In a tyre moulding press comprising upper and lower moulds 3, 4 in which a tyre is shaped and cured by the application of direct fluid pressure, the beads are clamped by rings 15, 14 which are each moved vertically by cylinders 23, 22, and each have a fixed hub 35 and a hub 34 which is rotated by a cylinder 23<SP>1</SP> or 22<SP>1</SP> to expand or contract the rings through links 28, 29. In operation, with a tyre band 24 on the lower mould 4, the operator pushes a button 49, Fig. 3, causing the upper mould 3 to move downwardly, a cam 48 associated with the mould or part of a separate timer operates, in turn, switches 50, 51, 52, (a) energizing a valve 53 to move the rings 14, 15 to the position shown in Fig. 3, (b) energizing a valve 70 to cause the rings to expand, and a valve 57 to allow low pressure fluid to pass through an inlet 25 into the tyre, and (c) when the moulds 3, 4 are in contact, energizing a timer, and de-energizing the valve 57 and energizing a valve 56 to introduce steam under pressure into the tyre. After curing, the steam is blown out of the tyre, and after cooling, the tyre is removed from the mould.
