Abstract

1,213,574. Moulding tyres. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 14 Feb., 1968 [15 Feb., 19671, No. 7204/68. Heading B5A. An annulus 13 of vulcanizable tread rubber is placed on a former comprising an expansible dummy tyre carcass 8 covered by a rigid belt 10 and a sheet 12 to prevent adherence of the annulus with the belt; this assembly is located centrally within a moulding apparatus comprising plates 2, 14, rings 3, 4 and tread moulding segments 17. The latter are brought into engagement with the plates 2, 14, and the carcass inflated by feeding hot water or steam into a bag 7 to thereby impress the tread pattern on the annulus. The tread supporting region of the former is of substantially greater rigidity than that of the tyre carcass to which the tread is to be attached. The carcass is then deflated and the plate 14 and carcass removed leaving the annulus adhered to the segments 17. The latter are slightly separated by moving them radially outwardly, and a knife passes between adjacent segments to cut the annulus into segments which are spaced apart further to permit the entry of a carcass to which the tread segments are moulded and vulcanized after the apparatus has been re-assembled and the bag 7 again inflated. Each segment 17 is radially displaced by a mechanism including a hook 22 on a screw 24 carried by a support 27 and moved radially by a nut 25. The segments are clamped in their radially innermost positions by a surrounding frusto-conical member.
