Abstract

1,032,746. Manufacturing pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. April 9, 1963 [April 25, 1962], No. 15683/62. Heading B5A. A pre-formed tread band 43 (Fig. 3, not shown) having a plurality of parallel tread bars 41 (Fig. 2, not shown) on either side of and inclined with respect to its midcircumferential plane, is secured around the carcass of a tyre, the tread and carcass are positioned on a horizontal, freely rotatable, circular table 5, between the two halves 2, 3 of a split mould 1 (Fig. 1), each mould half being provided with a matrix pattern 4 corresponding to the pattern of the tread bars, and the mould is closed and simultaneously the tyre and mould are relatively rotated to locate the tread bars in the grooves of the mould. Fig. 5 (not shown) illustrates apparatus for assembling a tread band 43 and carcass 44. Thus the tread band 43 is located in a tread ring 37 (Figs. 4, 5, not shown) mounted on a table 8, the carcass 44 is located coaxially between two end members 24, 24a around an uninflated expansible diaphragm 25, the two end members are brought together and the diaphragm is inflated to form the carcass into toroidal shape and force it into engagement with the tread band. The end members 24, 24a are then locked together by locking members 30 and the toroidally shaped tyre and carcass support positioned within the mould 1.
