Abstract

1,268,480. Wheel tyres. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. 17 July, 1970 [24 July, 1969], No. 34918/70. Heading B7C. A pneumatic tyre 20 which has a separately formed tread band 33 includes a carcass 22 extending continuously and circumferentially to form a generally ring-like shape and bead cores 24, 25 connected to opposed sidewalls 27, 28 which merge into a crown portion 31, the members 27, 28, 31 being formed of a first elastomeric material e.g. a polyurethane, while the tread band 33 comprises substantially inextensible members 35, 36 embedded co-extensively throughout a continuous ring of a second elastomeric material which includes an intermediate portion 39 engaging the crown 31 either by means of a known adhesive or by irregularities 44 in the surfaces of carcass 22 and tread portion 39 respectively and having first and second sidewall engaging portions 40, 41 respectively, engaging at least a portion of the opposed sidewalls 27, 28 respectively. The members 35, 36 may be wire cord members or synthetic or natural textile cords and the cords 35 extend circumferentially of the carcass 22 while the cords 36 extend generally transversely of this direction. The tread band 33 may be constructed and then located in a mould adapted for the centrifugal casting of polyurethane tyres. Bead cores are located in the mould which is then rotated and polyurethane material is introduced in order to form the carcass 22.
