Abstract

1,109,465. Moulding tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. 3 Sept., 1965 [25 Sept., 1964], No. 39076/64. Heading B5A. A pneumatic tyre mould has opposed annular side wall mould portions with a segmental tread mould ring 2 therebetween; the ring comprises a number of radially movable segments 5, 6 with end walls 8, 9 which abut when the segments are in their radially innermost positions, and the end walls 8 of each alternate segment 5 are parallel to the direction of radial movement of that segment. The alternate segments 6 are moved to their radially innermost positions before the segments 5. Each segment and the side wall mould portions are moved into position by fluid operated piston-and-cylinder assemblies; in Fig. 2 the assemblies 11, 13 include toggle linkages 12, 14. A cylindrical tyre carcass is located on a former which is then inflated to bring the carcass to toroidal shape; its crown is engaged by an inextensible breaker reinforcement surrounded by a tread layer, and side wall portions are applied, after which the assembly is removed from the former and placed in the mould, an inflatable bag being located within the tyre during the moulding.
