Abstract

839,488. Retreading tyres. PARK, H. B., and SASLOVE, M. July 12, 1957, No. 22090/57. Class 87(2). An inflatable rubber bag 40 for retreading a tyre in a two-part mould 12, 14, heated by steam pipes 20, or in a band type mould is made of such a shape that it only presses against the tread of the tyre. The bag is held against the tyre by a rim 42 comprising a series of arcuate sections 43 connected together by pins 80, and forced outwardly against the bag by a pivoted clamping tool 94. An axial bead 62 on the bag engages a groove in the rim to locate the bag with respect to the rim. The bag is inflated by either air or steam through a valve 58. A valve 60 provides a bleed, when the bag is used with steam. When air is used, one of the valves may be plugged. The junction between the tread and side wall parts of the tyre is engaged by an annular ring 36 separated from the mould by annular air gaps 38 to prevent the side walls from being heated. The mould sections are retained between top and bottom plates 22. In a modification, Figs 4 and 5 (not shown), larger tyres may be accommodated in the mould by placing inserts between the mould sections.
