Abstract

Tyres are centrifugally cast in a rotatable mould 13a, 13b within which is located an inflatable core 26; moulding material is fed to the space between the core and mould from hoppers 41 containing materials of different physical properties, so that by varying the material fed to the mould space a tyre is produced of material having properties which vary from one region to another. For example, a material which has been centrifuged to form the tyre crown can be left to harden before different materials are fed to the mould to be centrifuged at different speeds with the core inflated to different pressures to form different parts of the tyre sidewall. Tyre bead inserts are placed within the mould space before the mould is brought to the casting station. Alternatively, a tyre carcass with its bead rings in position may be treated in the mould before the casting operation. A circular mould tube 12 rotates about a pedestal 11 and supports a circumferentially spaced set of moulds 13 which are brought in turn to a casting station where the mould is charged. Each mould lower half 13b is secured to a disc 14 rotated by a motor 16 having a drive wheel 15 which, by pivoting the motor, can be brought into and out of engagement with the disc. A cylinder 21 depending and integral with the disc accommodates a piston 22 which carries a bush 23 clamped between the mould halves and attached to the upper bead (27), Fig. 3, (not shown), of the inflatable core. The lower bead of the core is clamped between rings attached to the lower mould half. When the upper mould half is removed and the piston 22 raised the core is axially extended. Pressurizing fluid is supplied to the core through passageway 56 from the cylinder 21, and moulding material is supplied to the mould space through a vertically adjustable nozzle 32, which seals within a recess in the bush 23, and passage (51-55). Each hopper supplies a separate metering device 40 comprising a chamber 42 and a fluid pressure operated ram 43 which forces material to a main cylinder 33 from which the material is forced by a piston 46 extending from a ram 47. In passing to the main cylinder the material is heated in plasticizing passages 45.
