Abstract

827,263. Moulding air springs. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Nov. 12, 1957 [Dec. 5, 1956], No. 35202/57. Class 87(2). In manufacture air spring 20, Fig. 2, made of plies 22, 23, of rubberised fabric attached to bead rings 24, 25 and lined with a layer of neoprene, is placed on base 33 of a three piece mould. As the intermediate and top sections 30, 28, of the mould are pushed down onto the air spring, Fig. 4, air under pressure is introduced into the spring through passage 48. When the three sections of the mould are firmly in contact with each other mandrel 35 is raised, Fig. 6, to mould the small bead 26, the large bead 27 being moulded between intermediate and lower portions of the mould. Steam under pressure is now introduced through passage 49 to effect vulcanisation of the air spring. After vulcanisation a vacuum is drawn inside the spring to collapse it and intermediate and top sections of the mould are withdrawn. Subsequently air under pressure is introduced into the air spring to blow it out of the mould.
