Abstract

The process of remoulding a tyre is carried out in two distinct stages, one of which comprises applying a veneer of vulcanizable rubber to each sidewall of the tyre cover and subsequently heating the sidewalls under pressure between a pair of shaped platens to mould and vulcanize the rubber veneer to the sidewalls, and the other stage comprising applying a length of vulcanizable rubber to the outer periphery of the cover and subsequently heating the said outer peripheral portion under pressure, while located within a cylindrical curing ring, to mould and vulcanize the tread to the cover. Preferably the remoulding of the sidewalls is effected before retreading, although the order may be reversed. In an example the sidewalls of a tyre cover were lightly buffed from the heads to the shoulders the rubber veneer applied and an air bag placed within the cover. The cover and tube were then placed between a pair of circular-shaped platens each having attached thereto a coil of steam pipe and having rims which retain the tyre heads at any required spacing by inserting spacer rings between the rims on each platen. The cover was then subjected to heat and pressure to vulcanize the rubber veneer, the tube deflated and withdrawn after which a strip of tread rubber was applied to the periphery of the tyre the heads spread and the tyre inserted in a curing ring of the tyre described in Specification 661,627 and the vulcanization carried out as described in Specification 420,829.
