Abstract
867,577. Valves. GROVE VALVE & REGULATOR CO. Aug. 12, 1958 [Aug. 26, 1957], No. 25909/58. Class 135. A resilient substantially triangular crosssection valve seating ring 76, Fig. 4, is freely held in a dovetail-like groove 74 having sides of greater slope than those of the ring so that the lips 83, 84 of the groove serve to retain the ring, and means are provided for applying upstream pressure to the base and upstream side of the ring to urge it into sealing contact with the valve member when the latter is in a closed position. Fig. 2 shows the seating ring 76 held in a groove in a butterfly valve casing housing a valve member 19 bolted to spindles 22, 23 journalled in the casing. The valve is actuated by a lever 46 splined to the upper spindle 22 and having a spring-loaded detent plunger 53 which engages a serrated edge 52 of a plate 51, Fig. 6, secured to the casing, a screw 60 enabling the valve to be locked in any actuated -position between end positions set by stops 57, 59 on the plate 57 being engaged respectively by lug 56 or a shoulder 58 on the lever 46. In the valve open position the seating ring 76 only engages the lips 83, 84 of the groove 74 and the base of the groove adjacent its apices and its apex 79 projects beyond the groove, but in the valve closed position, Fig. 4, upstream pressure acting through passages 90 or 91 forces the ring to one side of the groove and the apex 79 into close sealing contact with the valve member, also additional force is supplied by upstream pressure being admitted through non-return valves (not shown) to the underside of the sealing ring at 92.
