Abstract
867,560. Electroplating. MULLARD Ltd. Jan. 1, 1960, No. 66/60. Class 41. A method of electrodepositing a metal on separated conductive portions 5 on an insulating base 4 comprises making electrical connection to the portions 5 by way of separate electricallyconductive bodies 7, e.g. steel balls, which touch one another and are caused to move relative to the portions 5. The member 4, 5 is located in an insulating container 1 rotated about an inclined shaft 2, metal studs 8 delivering current from a contact 9 to the balls 7. Alternatively, electrical connection to the balls 7 may be by a contact placed in the container and insulated from the electrolyte solution, and the bodies 7 may be agitated by rocking the container 1 instead of rotating it. The bodies 7 may be housed in a jig in the container 1, the jig being caused to move relative to the container. Two examples are described. In one, employing a grid anode, 200 gms. per litre K 4 [Fe(CN) 6 1 and 30 gms. per litre of a mixture of gold potassium cyanide and free potassium cyanide was the electrolyte, a voltage of 6 producing an amperage of 4, the container being rotated at 17 r.p.m. In the other, 200 gms. per litre of CuSO 4 and 56 gms. per litre H 2 SO 4 was the electrolyte employing a copper anode at 6 volts to produce 1.5 amps. The steel balls 7 were plated with copper prior to being used in the container.
