Abstract

1356204 Vacuum switches SIEMENS AG 21 Sept 1971 [2 Oct 1970] 44040/71 Heading H1N A vacuum switch includes an arcing contact member 8, Fig. 1 which extends spirally or helically about the path of relative movement of the main contact members 7 to define an arcing path on to which arc L is magnetically driven and is mounted on a support 9 including a zone 10 of poor electrical conductivity compared with the contact members 7, 8, the arcing contact member 8 being electrically connected to one of the main contact members 7 and having the turns spacing B and turns depth H with the ratio B/H in the range from 1 : 2 to 1 10. One or each main contact members 7 may have an arcing contact member 8, with the beginning of the spiral connected to a member 11 of good electrical conductivity in electrical contact with the respective contact member. Alternatively, helical arcing contact members 20, 24, Fig. 6, on supports 21, 23, of poor electrical conductivity surround main contact members 7, 22, and provide a magnetic loop 19 acting on arc L. Members 7 are copper-bismuth or tungsten-copper, whilst members 8, 11 are of copper, and zone 10 and supports 21, 23, are high-grade steel.
